Bar Council of India Sets November 30, 2025 for AIBE-XX; Registration to Open September 29

NEW DELHI – The Bar Council of India (BCI) has officially announced the schedule for the twentieth edition of the All India Bar Examination (AIBE-XX), setting the stage for thousands of law graduates to secure their license to practice. In a notification issued on September 26, 2025, the BCI confirmed that the mandatory qualifying examination will be held on Sunday, November 30, 2025.

The announcement provides a clear timeline for aspirants, with the online registration and payment window scheduled to open on September 29, 2025. This critical examination serves as the gateway for law graduates to transition from academia to active legal practice, assessing their fundamental analytical abilities and understanding of law.

According to the notification, signed by Ashok Kumar Pandey, Secretary of the Bar Council of India Trust (PEARL-FIRST), the passing criteria remain stringent. "The passing percentage has been fixed at 45% for General/OBC candidates and 40% for SC/ST and disabled candidates," the official statement confirms, underscoring the BCI's commitment to maintaining a standard of competency for new entrants to the legal profession.

Understanding the AIBE Framework: Exam Pattern and Structure

The AIBE is a comprehensive, national-level assessment designed to ensure that new advocates possess the minimum required skills to represent clients and uphold the principles of justice. The examination pattern for AIBE-XX is expected to follow the established format, focusing on core legal subjects.

Exam Structure Overview:

  • Mode: The examination will be conducted as an offline, pen-and-paper based test.
  • Duration: Candidates will have 3 hours to complete the exam. PWD candidates with 40% or more disability will be allotted an additional 20 minutes.
  • Question Type: The paper will consist of 100 Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs).
  • Marking Scheme: Each question carries one mark, with no negative marking for incorrect answers or unattempted questions. This encourages candidates to attempt all questions.
  • Syllabus: The questions are drawn from 19 core law subjects typically covered in an undergraduate law curriculum, including Constitutional Law, Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), Code of Civil Procedure (CPC), Evidence Act, and Professional Ethics.
  • Language Options: The BCI continues to offer the examination in 22 languages, including English and 21 vernacular languages, allowing candidates to take the test in their preferred medium.

This structure is designed to evaluate a candidate's practical and theoretical knowledge across a broad spectrum of legal disciplines, ensuring they are prepared for the multifaceted nature of legal practice.

The Registration and Post-Examination Process

Application Procedure: Aspiring candidates, including final-year law students and those who have completed their LLB, must navigate a multi-step online registration process. This includes:

  1. Initial Registration: Creating an account with a valid mobile number and email ID.
  2. Form Completion: Filling in personal, academic, and enrollment details. Candidates must also select their preferred test city and language for the question paper.
  3. Document Upload: Submitting scanned copies of necessary documents, such as a passport-sized photograph, signature, enrollment certificate, and LLB degree/mark sheets.
  4. Fee Payment: Paying the application fee online. For AIBE-XX, the fee is set at Rs. 3,500 for General/OBC candidates and Rs. 2,500 for SC/ST candidates.
  5. Final Submission: Reviewing the application for accuracy before final submission and downloading a copy for personal records.

Post-Exam Formalities: Following the examination on November 30, the BCI will initiate the post-exam procedures. This begins with the release of a provisional answer key, typically within a few days of the exam. Candidates will be given a specific window to review the key and raise objections, with supporting evidence, against any answers they believe are incorrect.

After considering all valid objections, the BCI will publish a final answer key, which will form the basis for evaluating the OMR sheets. The results, indicating the qualifying status of each candidate, are expected to be declared approximately one to two months after the exam.

The Coveted Certificate of Practice (CoP)

Successfully clearing the AIBE is the final hurdle for law graduates to obtain the Certificate of Practice (CoP). "The AIBE is a qualifying examination conducted by the Bar Council of India to assess the eligibility of law graduates for practicing law," a BCI source stated, reiterating the exam's purpose.

The CoP is the official document that authorizes an advocate to appear and practice before any court or tribunal in India. Candidates who qualify for the AIBE-XX will be able to collect their CoP from their respective State Bar Councils. In a move towards digitization, the BCI has also facilitated the delivery of the CoP in a soft-copy format through the AIBESCOPE mobile application, generally within 60 days of the result declaration.

This streamlined process from examination to certification is vital for the thousands of young lawyers eagerly waiting to embark on their professional journey and contribute to the Indian justice system.
