A writ petition may be dismissed as infructuous when the relief sought has lost its substratum or necessity due to subsequent developments as represented by the petitioners' counsel.

Headnote:The petitioners invoked the extraordinary jurisdiction under Art. 226 of the Constitution of India, seeking a writ of mandamus to compel an impartial election to the administrative committee of a registered religious trust, alleging necessity for intervention to prevent untoward incidents. The court observed that the proceedings were brought to ensure administrative oversight by the regulatory body. The primary issue before the court concerned the maintainability of the writ petition in light of subsequent developments and the request for relief regarding the election process. The court noted the submissions of counsel regarding the current status of the requested reliefs. The writ petition is dismissed as having become infructuous.
