IN THE HIGH COURT OF JUDICATURE AT MADRAS
P.B. Balaji, J
P. Muthuchamy – Appellant
Versus
Rajat Beeton – Respondent
CONT P(MD) No.904 of 2026

Advocates:
For the Appellants/Petitioners: J. Vishnu
For the Respondents: A. Kannan, Additional Government Pleader

Contempt proceedings are not the appropriate forum to challenge the merits of an administrative decision passed in compliance with a court's direction; such challenges must be filed as independent legal remedies.

Headnote:The proceedings concern a contempt petition filed under S.11 of the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971, alleging willful disobedience of a court direction rendered in a Writ Petition to process a representation for patta. The court noted that the respondents had complied with the order, albeit by rejecting the representation, and determined that the contempt petition could not be sustained. The issue before the court was whether there was a willful and wanton disobedience of the order dated 04.02.2025. The court reasoned that in the absence of continued non-compliance, particularly where a decision on the merits has been communicated, the remedy for the petitioner lies in challenging the rejection order through appropriate legal channels rather than contempt proceedings. The contempt petition is closed.
