Versus
Secretary to Government, Water Supply and Sewerage Board – Respondent
W.P.No.12687 of 2026

Advocates:
For the Appellants/Petitioners: N.Beulah John Selvaraj
For the Respondents: T.Chandrasekaran, S.Santosh

A writ of mandamus can be issued to direct a public authority to consider and decide upon a representation for the disbursement of terminal benefits within a stipulated time frame.

Headnote:The petitioner filed a writ petition under Art. 226 of the Constitution of India seeking a Writ of Mandamus to direct the respondents to disburse terminal benefits—including Family Pension, GPF, SGPF, GIS amount, and leave encashment—of her deceased husband based on a representation dated 20.01.2026. The court was requested to determine whether the respondents should be directed to consider and pass orders on the petitioner's representation within a specified timeframe. The court observed that a direction to consider the representation on its own merits would be sufficient. With the direction to the 2nd respondent to consider and pass orders on the representation dated 20.01.2026 within a period of 6 weeks, this writ petition is disposed of.

O R D E R

This writ petition is filed for the following relief:

“To direct the 2nd respondent to disburse the terminal benefits of the petitioner’s late husband K. Babu, namely, Family Pension, GPF, SGPF, GIS amount, Earned Leave encashment, Surrender Leave benefits. Family pension arrears and other attendant benefits, based on the representation dated 20.01.2026.”

2. The learned counsel for the petitioner would submit that though a larger prayer is sought, it would suffice if the 2nd respondent is directed to consider and pass orders on the representation of the petitioner dated 20.01.2026, within a specific period.

3. Considering the limited request, a direction is issued to the 2nd respondent to consider and pass orders on the petitioner’s representation dated 20.01.2026 on its own merits, within a period of 6 weeks from the date of receipt of a copy of this order.

4. With the above direction, this writ petition is disposed of. No costs.
