Kerala High Court Remembers Justice K. John Mathew: A Legacy of Humility, Integrity, and Record-Breaking Disposal

KOCHI – The Kerala High Court convened a Full Court reference on Monday, November 10, 2025, to honour the memory and profound legacy of former judge, Justice K. John Mathew, who passed away at the age of 93. Members of the bench and the bar gathered in a solemn assembly to pay tribute to a jurist remembered not only for his sharp legal mind but for his unparalleled humility, unwavering integrity, and a work ethic that etched his name into the record books.

Justice Mathew, who served on the High Court bench with distinction from 1984 to 1994, left an indelible mark on the institution and the legal community he served. His life, both on and off the bench, was hailed as a shining example for legal professionals.

A Career of Distinguished Service

In his opening address at the Chief Justice's Court, Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar reflected on Justice Mathew's character and contributions. "Justice John Mathew is remembered for his calm and gentle demeanour, which embodied cordiality, humility and dignity," he stated. "His career in this Court reflected the values of hard work, humility and dedication to the justice delivery system. He discharged his duties and responsibilities in the true spirit of the oath he had taken."

Justice Mathew's service to the law did not conclude with his retirement from the High Court. Recognizing his vast experience and legal acumen, the Supreme Court of India designated him as a Senior Advocate, a role in which he continued to practice in New Delhi until 2003.

His post-judicial career was marked by a continued commitment to public service. He was entrusted with significant responsibilities, including heading the Government Commission to study the effects of Mineral Sand Mining along Kerala's coasts, a testament to the trust placed in his impartiality and thoroughness. Furthermore, he served as the Chairperson of the Selection Committee under the Juvenile Justice Act and was appointed as a SEBI Nominee Director and Chairman of the Cochin Stock Exchange, showcasing the breadth of his expertise beyond traditional judicial functions.

The Epitome of Judicial Temperament

Advocate General Gopalakrishna Kurup, in a personal and heartfelt tribute, reminisced about his own experiences appearing before Justice Mathew's court. He described the late judge as a "personification of humility" and "affable to one and all."

"Never did he allow the pressures of the bench to disturb his calm demeanour. Indeed, no one can recall an occasion when he lost his composure in court," the Advocate General shared. This portrait of unshakable calm and grace under pressure resonated deeply with those assembled, highlighting a judicial temperament that is often sought but rarely perfected.

Mr. Kurup concluded his remarks with a powerful sentiment: "We bow in grief at the passing of the exceptional legal mind and a compassionate soul whose life stood as shining example of integrity, humility and a true spirit of the legal profession."

A Record-Setting Pace for Justice

Beyond his admirable character, Justice Mathew was also a judge of extraordinary efficiency. The Advocate General brought to light a remarkable achievement that underscores his dedication to clearing judicial backlogs. In 1989, Justice Mathew's court achieved a staggering disposal of 28,221 cases in just 209 working days , a feat that earned him a well-deserved entry in the Limca Book of Records.

This phenomenal output was not an isolated event. Further records were noted: * Disposal of 2,019 cases in a mere 4 days in June 1989. * Disposal of 607 cases in a single day within the Company Jurisdiction.

These figures paint a picture of a judge who was not only meticulous and fair but also intensely focused on the core function of the judiciary: the delivery of timely justice. His ability to manage his docket with such proficiency stands as a benchmark and a source of inspiration in an era where judicial delays remain a significant challenge.

Unwavering Commitment to Constitutional Duty

Perhaps the most poignant tribute came from Adv. Yeshwant Shenoy, President of the Kerala High Court Advocates' Association (KHCAA). He recounted an incident that powerfully illustrated Justice Mathew's profound sense of duty, which transcended even personal grief. Mr. Shenoy recalled that immediately after attending the funeral rites for his own wife, Justice Mathew proceeded directly to a polling booth to cast his vote in an election, fulfilling his constitutional responsibility as a citizen without fail.

This anecdote provided a moving insight into the principles that guided Justice Mathew's life. "The bar has lost a legend. Kerala has lost a distinguished son and the nation lost a constitutional luminary but his example remains with us a beacon to guide our path," said Mr. Shenoy.

He urged the legal community to honour Justice Mathew's memory by upholding the values he cherished: "integrity in practice, excellence in advocacy, compassion in our dealings and unwavering commitment to justice for all."

The Full Court reference concluded with two minutes of silence, a moment of collective reflection on a life of profound purpose and enduring impact. Justice K. John Mathew's legacy is not merely in the judgments he authored or the positions he held, but in the impeccable standard of conduct, humility, and dedication he set for the entire legal fraternity.
