Read a Judgment Daily, Embrace Technology: Chief Justice Bajanthri’s Farewell Message to the Bar

PATNA — In a heartfelt and reflective farewell address, Chief Justice P.V. Bajanthri marked his retirement from the Patna High Court, encapsulating a distinguished judicial career that spanned over a decade and saw the disposal of approximately 40,000 cases. His speech offered a profound look into his tenure, gratitude for the legal fraternity of Bihar, and a powerful call to action for the next generation of lawyers.

A Journey on the "Enlightened Soil of Bihar"

Chief Justice Bajanthri began his address by paying homage to the rich cultural and historical heritage of the region, expressing his deep reverence for the land of Lord Buddha and Mahavira. "Mahatma Gautam Budhh, Mahavir evam Magadh Samarajya ke mahaan paavan bhoomi ko main pranaam karta hoon…Aur aap sabhi ka aabhar vyakt karta hoon…Aur aaj aapke samne kritagyata ke bhaav se khada hoon," he stated, bowing to the great holy land and expressing profound gratitude to the assembled members of the Bar and Bench.

Reflecting on his transfer to the Patna High Court in 2021, the Chief Justice described it as the beginning of a "most memorable chapter" of his judicial journey. He noted the unique spiritual and intellectual environment of Bihar, calling it the "sacred and enlightened soil of Bihar- the land of Lord Buddha, a timeless source of wisdom and inspiration."

This environment, he explained, provided him with both comfort and clarity. "I was constantly encouraged to strive for greater excellence in the discharge of my duties," he shared. "My aim was to hear the maximum number of cases and reduce the pendency of the Hon'ble Court."

Reflections on a Decade of Service

Chief Justice Bajanthri's career as a judge, spanning ten years, nine months, and fifteen days, was marked by a relentless commitment to reducing judicial backlogs. His disposal of over 40,000 cases stands as a testament to this dedication. His tenure at the Patna High Court, which saw him serve as both Acting and then permanent Chief Justice, was a period of significant collaboration.

"I had the privilege of sharing Bench with as many as 16 Hon'ble Judges," he recalled. "Each one of them, with their distinct outlook and judicial wisdom, enriched my own understanding and contributed immensely to the collective process of decision making."

He also extended a special note of thanks to his brother and sister judges for their efforts in helping him understand Hindi, an initiative he credited with bridging the communication gap between the Bar and the Bench. "Together, we have endeavoured to dispense justice in the vast number of matters, touching the lives of countless litigants," he said. "This experience, for me has been both humbling and deeply fulfilling and will remain one of the most cherished chapters of my journey."

Acknowledging Pillars of the Justice System

The Chief Justice made it a point to thank the key stakeholders who contribute to the functioning of the court. He extended his sincere appreciation to Advocate General P.K. Shahi and his team for their continuous support and valuable assistance on behalf of the State Government, which he noted is the largest litigant in the court.

He specifically praised the Advocate General for his "personal interest and sustained efforts" in finalizing the land for the establishment of the Bihar Judicial Academy, a crucial institution for judicial training and excellence.

His gratitude also encompassed his colleagues from his parent Karnataka High Court and the Punjab & Haryana High Court, the Officers of the Registry, the Registrar General, his personal staff, and all court officials whose "unseen hands uphold the edifice of justice."

A Clarion Call to Young Advocates

A significant portion of Chief Justice Bajanthri’s speech was dedicated to the junior members of the legal profession, whom he addressed as the "future custodians of our justice system." He implored them to look beyond the mechanics of legal advocacy and embrace the profession's higher calling.

"The true essence of our noble profession transcends not merely legal advocacy," he advised. "It also embodies a solemn commitment to equity and service."

He made a passionate appeal to senior members of the Bar to actively mentor and guide young lawyers, particularly those from humble backgrounds. "Let us foster an environment where talent is nourished irrespective of financial circumstances; where knowledge flows freely, and where the scaffolding of support ensures no aspirant is left adrift. In lifting one another, we elevate the very fabric of justice."

Distilling his advice into a memorable mantra for modern legal practice, he urged: "Read a judgment daily, embrace technology regularly, grow constantly. Stay Sharp, Stay Ahead!"

A Humble Adieu

Concluding his address, Chief Justice Bajanthri adopted a tone of humility and grace, asking for forgiveness for any inadvertent errors and hoping that his good deeds would be remembered. "Koi achchhe karam kiye ho, to unhe jaroor yaad karen, Jo bhi bhul-chook hui ho, use kripya maaf karen," he said.

Chief Justice Bajanthri’s journey in law began with his enrollment as an advocate in 1990. He practiced extensively before the High Court of Karnataka and various tribunals. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Karnataka High Court on January 2, 2015, and subsequently served at the Punjab and Haryana High Court before his repatriation to Karnataka and eventual transfer to Patna in 2021. As he bids adieu to active judicial service, he leaves behind a legacy of diligence, collaboration, and a profound commitment to mentoring the future of the Indian legal system.
