Subject : Legal Education - Moot Court Competitions
Gandhinagar, Gujarat – Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU), an institution of national importance under India's Ministry of Home Affairs, has officially announced the second edition of its prestigious International Moot Court Competition (RIMC 2025). Hosted by the university's School of Criminal Law and Military Law, the event is set to take place from November 14-16, 2025, at the RRU campus in Gandhinagar, promising a rigorous and engaging experience for law students worldwide.
Building on the success of its inaugural edition, RIMC 2025 will revolve around the pressing theme of “International Law and Global Security.” This specialized focus aligns with RRU's mandate to advance scholarship in security and strategic domains, offering a unique platform for aspiring legal minds to grapple with some of the most complex challenges facing the international community.
The competition will simulate proceedings before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), challenging participants to craft compelling legal arguments on a sophisticated moot proposition. According to the announcement, the problem will traverse critical and contemporary issues, including the regulation of dual-use trade, the legality and enforcement of third-country sanctions, and the intricate legal questions surrounding compliance with international court rulings.
"Participants will argue before a simulated International Court of Justice on contemporary issues such as dual-use trade, third-country sanctions, and compliance with international court rulings," the official brochure states. This focus ensures that the competition is not merely an academic exercise but a direct engagement with real-world dilemmas that frequently occupy foreign ministries, international tribunals, and global policy forums.
The School of Criminal Law and Military Law, which is organizing the event, aims to operate "following global practices and industry standards of legal education through research, innovation, and extension activities." The competition is a cornerstone of this vision, designed to foster a new generation of lawyers equipped to navigate the intersection of law, security, and geopolitics.
RIMC 2025 is structured to attract top-tier talent from across the globe. The competition features a two-stage selection process. Initially, teams must register and submit written arguments, known as memorials. From these submissions, the top 24 teams will be shortlisted and invited to the in-person oral rounds at the expansive RRU campus in Gujarat.
Key Dates for Prospective Teams:
* Opening of Registrations: April 15, 2025
* Proposition & Brochure Release: July 15, 2025
* Registration Deadline: September 5, 2025
* Memorial Submission Deadline: September 20, 2025
* Confirmation for Oral Rounds: October 15, 2025
* Oral Rounds at RRU Campus: November 14–16, 2025
Eligibility criteria are broad for international participants, welcoming students "pursuing a degree or similar graduate or postgraduate qualification or training in law, or in a field related to international law, or in international relations," provided they have adequate instruction in international law. For Indian teams, participation is restricted to students enrolled in a three-year or five-year L.L.B. degree program.
Each institution is permitted to field one team, comprising two or three members. To ensure fairness and impartiality, teams must maintain anonymity throughout the memorial and oral rounds, with speakers only permitted to disclose their names to the judges during oral arguments.
The competition offers a substantial prize pool totaling over INR 2,50,000 (approximately USD 2,900), rewarding excellence in advocacy and research. The breakdown is as follows:
* Winner: INR 90,000 (approx. USD 1,050)
* Runner-Up: INR 70,000 (approx. USD 815)
* Best Memorial: INR 50,000 (approx. USD 581)
* Best Speaker: INR 40,000 (approx. USD 465)
In addition to cash prizes, the event promises "international scholarships, and a mooting experience judged by global experts in international law," providing invaluable networking and career development opportunities.
The fee structure is designed to be accessible. A registration fee of ₹3000 (USD 35) and an optional accommodation fee of ₹5000 (USD 59) are only applicable to the 24 teams that qualify for the in-person oral rounds. This model ensures that financial constraints do not hinder initial participation and memorial submission.
RIMC 2025 positions itself as more than just a competition; it is an invitation for law students "to engage, compete, and contribute to global legal international law discourse." By simulating the highest judicial body of the United Nations and focusing on cutting-edge security law, Rashtriya Raksha University is cultivating a vital forum for intellectual exchange. The event offers a unique opportunity for participants to test their legal acumen, receive feedback from leading practitioners and academics, and build connections with peers who share a passion for international law.
As the world grapples with evolving security threats and a shifting geopolitical landscape, the need for legal professionals with expertise in these areas has never been greater. RIMC 2025 is a timely and significant initiative, poised to make a substantial contribution to legal education and the broader international legal community.
