Gyanvapi Mosque Dispute
Subject : Legal
The Allahabad High Court has adjourned till February 15 the hearing on a plea challenging the Varanasi district court order allowing Hindu prayers in a cellar of the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi. The Anjuman Intezamia Masjid committee, which looks after the affairs of the mosque adjacent to the Kashi Vishwanath temple, filed the appeal. The Muslim side argued that the plaintiff has no right to the disputed property and that the order to permit puja in the cellar is illegal. The Hindu side submitted papers to prove their possession of the property. The court has requested both sides to try to settle their disputes through mediation or an alternative dispute redressal mechanism.
