SC Collegium Recommends Appointing Advocate, Judicial Officer to Gauhati High Court

The Supreme Court Collegium, in a meeting held on August 18, 2026, has formally approved the appointment of two new judges to the Gauhati High Court. The Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant, has recommended one advocate and one judicial officer for elevation to the bench.

A Mixed Batch of Legal Talent

The Collegium’s latest recommendation includes Advocate Shri Nchumbemo Mozhui, marking a promotion from the bar to the bench. Alongside him, the Collegium has also cleared the name of Judicial Officer Smt. Helen Dawngliani, bringing trial court experience to the High Court. The selections reflect the dual-track system for judicial appointments in India, where both practicing lawyers and members of the subordinate judiciary are considered for elevation.

Following Due Process

The appointments are now subject to the requisite notification by the Central Government. Once the Ministry of Law and Justice issues the formal notification, the two appointees will assume office as judges of the Gauhati High Court. The process underscores the role of the Supreme Court Collegium as the primary body for recommending judicial elevations to the High Courts and the Supreme Court of India.

No Controversy in This Round

Unlike some high-profile appointments that have sparked debate, these recommendations appear to be routine administrative decisions by the Collegium. The Gauhati High Court, which serves the northeastern states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, and others, will benefit from the infusion of fresh judicial talent.

The move signals continued efforts by the judiciary to fill vacancies and strengthen the High Court benches across the country.
