The Centre has expressed willingness to extend its notice of a fact check unit (FCU) for two weeks until a third judge hears the case and decides on interim relief. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta stated that the Centre would file brief written submissions to contest a plea for continuing the statement till a majority judgment is delivered. A two-judge HC bench had earlier delivered a split verdict on the validity of a rule under the amended Information Technology Act that empowers the Centre to have an FCU to identify fake information on social media platforms. The matter was to be referred to a third judge of HC. Mehta said he will file a reply by Wednesday to a fresh plea filed by standup comic Kunal Kamra seeking a stay of the FCU rule.
