Gurugram, India – In a significant move that underscores the dynamic nature of India's top-tier legal market, JSA Advocates and Solicitors has announced the return of veteran corporate lawyer Amitabh Sharma as a Partner in its Gurugram office. Sharma, a seasoned adviser with over 25 years of experience, rejoins the firm where he began his legal career, bringing a wealth of expertise in mergers & acquisitions, private equity, projects, and financing that is expected to significantly bolster JSA's capabilities.
This "homecoming" marks the end of Sharma's six-year stint with NorthExcel Associates & Legal. His distinguished career trajectory includes senior roles at some of India's most prominent law firms. He previously served as a Managing Partner at HSA Advocates and was also a Partner at Khaitan & Co. His first tenure at JSA spanned six years, making his return a full-circle moment in his professional journey.
Sharma's return is being hailed by the firm's leadership as a strategic enhancement of its core corporate and infrastructure practices. His extensive experience spans a wide spectrum of advisory work for a diverse clientele, including multinational corporations, multilateral agencies, financial institutions, private equity firms, and public sector enterprises.
In a joint statement, Vivek K Chandy and Amar Gupta, Joint Managing Partners at JSA, warmly welcomed Sharma back into the fold. "We welcome Amitabh back to the firm," they stated. "Amitabh has to his credit years of pioneering work, including complex transactions and projects, making him a great advisor for today’s complex times. We are confident his deep experience will be a significant value addition to our clients."
The managing partners further emphasized the cultural significance of the move, adding, "In addition to further strengthening our Corporate & Infrastructure practices, his return is an endorsement of JSA’s culture and values that make it a great place to work that attracts the best talent.”
Sharma's practice is notably marked by a strong international dimension. He has been a key advisor on numerous cross-border transactions, guiding clients on complex acquisitions in jurisdictions such as the USA, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Indonesia, South Africa, and Mozambique. His expertise in crafting India entry and divestment strategies for multinational clients is a critical skill set in the current global economic climate.
Throughout his career, Sharma has cultivated a reputation for navigating intricate legal and commercial challenges. Venkatesh Raman Prasad, a Partner at JSA, highlighted this unique capability, noting, “Amitabh has had a distinguished career as a corporate and projects lawyer. His rare ability to navigate the intricate balance between commercial realities and legal complexities is what sets him apart."
Prasad continued, "His strategic mindset, honed through high-stakes international transactions, will strengthen our corporate and infrastructure practices.”
This reputation is backed by consistent recognition from leading international legal directories, including Chambers & Partners, Legal 500, and the International Financial Law Review, which have repeatedly ranked him as a leading lawyer in the corporate, projects, infrastructure, energy, and Public-Private Partnership (PPP) sectors.
Beyond his advisory roles, Sharma contributes to corporate governance as an Independent Director on the boards of several listed and unlisted Indian companies. This dual perspective—as both an external legal counsel and an internal board member—provides him with a unique and holistic understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing modern corporations.
Expressing his enthusiasm about rejoining the firm, Amitabh Sharma commented on the professional environment that drew him back. "I am delighted to return to JSA, a firm that has been an important part of my professional journey, and highly regarded for its independent professional management," he said. "I look forward to adding significant value to JSA clients, drawing upon my expertise and experience of advising top companies and investors during my tenure with leading firms across India.”
Sharma is an alumnus of the prestigious Campus Law Centre at Delhi University, from which he graduated in 1995, and is a member of the Bar Council of Delhi.
His return to JSA, a full-service national law firm founded in 1991 with over 600 legal professionals, is a testament to the firm's enduring appeal and its commitment to attracting and retaining top-tier legal talent. As corporations navigate an increasingly complex regulatory and transactional landscape, the addition of a practitioner with Sharma's depth of experience and strategic acumen positions JSA to further solidify its standing as a leader in the Indian legal industry. The move is not just an acquisition of talent but a reinforcement of the firm's strategic focus on high-value corporate, M&A, and infrastructure projects, signaling its readiness to tackle the most complex legal challenges for its clients.
