Extradition of Nikhil Gupta to the United States
Subject : International Law
A Czech appeals court has ruled that Prague can extradite to the United States an Indian man accused by the US of involvement in an unsuccessful plot to kill a Sikh separatist on American soil. The decision marks a significant development in the Pannun murder plot case, which has garnered international attention. Nikhil Gupta, a 52-year-old Indian national, was arrested in the Czech Republic in 2020 based on a request from the US authorities. The US alleges that Gupta conspired with an Indian government employee to assassinate Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a Sikh separatist leader living in the United States. The extradition ruling comes after a lengthy legal battle, with Gupta's defense team arguing against his extradition on various grounds. However, the Czech court ultimately determined that there was sufficient evidence to support the extradition request and that Gupta's rights would be protected in the US justice system. The decision is a major setback for Gupta, who now faces the prospect of being tried in the United States for his alleged involvement in the murder plot. The extradition process is expected to take several months, during which time Gupta will remain in custody in the Czech Republic.
