Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal Seeks 7-Day Extension of Interim Bail in Liquor Policy Case

Supreme Today News Desk

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has moved the Supreme Court seeking a 7-day extension of the interim bail granted to him in the Delhi Liquor Policy case. Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 in connection with the case and was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court on May 10 to campaign for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief has cited the need to undergo medical tests, including a PET-CT scan, as the reason for seeking the extension. Kejriwal has reportedly lost 7 kg of weight since his arrest, and his ketone levels are also said to be high, prompting doctors to recommend further examinations. The Supreme Court had earlier granted Kejriwal interim bail until June 1, directing him to surrender and return to Tihar Jail on June 2. However, with the election results due on June 4, Kejriwal 's legal counsel has argued that the extension is crucial for his well-being and to complete the necessary medical investigations. The Delhi Liquor Policy case revolves around alleged irregularities in the formulation and implementation of the Delhi Excise Policy (2021-22). The policy, introduced to modernize the capital's liquor business, has been at the center of a political storm, with the AAP accusing the Delhi Lieutenant Governor of making last-minute changes that adversely affected the policy's revenue expectations. Kejriwal 's arrest in the case has been a significant setback for the AAP, as prominent leaders like Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain are already behind bars on corruption allegations. The BJP has also criticized the Supreme Court's decision to grant Kejriwal interim bail, alleging that he received 'special treatment.' The Supreme Court is yet to rule on Kejriwal 's plea for the extension of interim bail. The outcome of this case will have significant implications for the Delhi Chief Minister and the ongoing political dynamics in the national capital.
