Epic Games vs. Apple Lawsuit
Subject : Technology - Antitrust
After more than three years of legal battles, the Epic Games vs. Apple lawsuit has finally come to an end. The US Supreme Court declined to hear the "Fortnite" maker's appeal, effectively ending the long-running legal dispute. The case centered around Epic Games' attempt to circumvent Apple's 30% App Store commission by implementing direct payments for "Fortnite" in 2020. Apple responded by removing the game from its App Store, leading to a series of legal challenges. Despite Epic Games' efforts, the company has largely lost at every step of the legal process, although Apple did not always emerge victorious. The Supreme Court's decision not to hear the appeal means that the lower court's rulings, which included a requirement for Apple to alter its App Store practices to avoid anti-steering, will stand. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney expressed disappointment with the outcome, stating that the company's goal was to promote a free market where competition is based on merit. Apple, on the other hand, maintained that Epic Games chose to break the App Store agreements it had signed. The App Store has faced regulatory pressure in recent years due to concerns over Apple's monopolistic power in the iPhone software ecosystem. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for the future of app stores and digital marketplaces.
