Mergers and Acquisitions
Subject : Business - Antitrust
A federal judge has blocked JetBlue Airways' proposed $3.8 billion acquisition of Spirit Airlines, siding with the Biden administration and the Justice Department's antitrust lawsuit against the merger. The judge ruled that the deal would reduce competition and harm consumers by eliminating Spirit, the nation's largest low-cost carrier. The decision is a major setback for JetBlue and Spirit, which had argued that the merger would benefit customers and boost their ability to compete with dominant US carriers. However, the judge found that JetBlue's plans to convert Spirit's planes to its own layout and charge higher fares would harm cost-conscious travelers who rely on Spirit's low fares. The ruling is a victory for the Justice Department, which has been cracking down on mergers in the airline industry. Last year, the department sued to block a proposed merger between American Airlines and JetBlue, which was ultimately abandoned. The department has also challenged mergers between Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways, and United Airlines and Continental Airlines.
Antitrust lawsuit - Merger blocked - Competition concerns - Consumer harm - Low-cost carrier - JetBlue Effect - Ultra-low-cost carrier - American Airlines - Southwest Airlines - AirTran Airways - United Airlines - Continental Airlines
