The Gujarat government has questioned the petitioners' selective public interest in seeking a probe into alleged fake encounters in the state from 2002 to 2006 and asked for an explanation. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argues that encounters have occurred in other states as well and that the petitioners have not provided any specific reasons for why they are only interested in investigating the encounters in Gujarat. The apex court had earlier appointed a monitoring authority headed by former top court judge Justice H S Bedi which had probed 17 alleged fake encounter cases in Gujarat from 2002 to 2006.
