ICJ Orders Israel to Halt Rafah Offensive, Citing 'Immense Risk' to Palestinians

Supreme Today News Desk

The International Court of Justice (ICJ), the top United Nations court, has issued a dramatic ruling ordering Israel to 'immediately halt its military offensive in Rafah' and withdraw from the enclave. The ruling came in response to a case brought by South Africa , which has accused Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza. In a 13-2 vote, the ICJ judges said Israel must 'immediately halt its military offensive, and any other action in the Rafah Governorate, which may inflict on the Palestinian group in Gaza conditions of life that could bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part.' The court cited the 'disastrous' humanitarian situation in Rafah, where over 800,000 Palestinians have been displaced since Israel 's assault began earlier this month. The ICJ also ordered Israel to maintain the Rafah border crossing open for the 'unhindered provision at scale of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance' to the besieged Gaza Strip. Additionally, the court directed Israel to ensure unimpeded access for any UN-mandated investigative bodies looking into allegations of genocide. This is the third time this year the ICJ has issued emergency orders seeking to curb the violence and alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. However, the court's rulings are legally binding but have often been ignored in the past. Israel i officials have reacted furiously to the ICJ's decision, with a government spokesperson calling it 'public suicide' and vowing that 'there is no power in the world that will push us' to halt the offensive. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to consult with senior ministers on how to respond. Meanwhile, South Africa 's foreign ministry has hailed the ruling as 'groundbreaking,' noting that it is the first time the ICJ has made an explicit order to Israel to halt military action in a specific part of Gaza. The Palestinian ambassador to the UN, Riyad Mansour, also welcomed the decision and called for Israel to abide by it. The ICJ's latest order comes as the International Criminal Court (ICC) is also considering arrest warrants for top Israel i and Hamas leaders over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the conflict in Gaza. The situation in Rafah and across the Gaza Strip remains dire, with aid agencies warning of a looming famine due to the disruption of vital supply routes. The ICJ's ruling represents a significant escalation of international pressure on Israel to end its offensive and address the worsening humanitarian crisis in the region.
