The Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) has officially opened the application window for the appointment of a Legal Officer on a contractual basis, targeting experienced legal professionals for its New Delhi campus. The premier business school, which operates under the Department of Commerce, Government of India, is seeking to bolster its administrative and regulatory framework through this recruitment drive. The deadline for interested candidates to submit their applications online is October 27, 2026.

The position offers a consolidated monthly remuneration ranging between ₹60,000 and ₹80,000, with the final pay scale determined by the successful candidate's specific qualifications and professional background. According to the official notification issued by the Registrar, Gaurav Gulati, the institute retains the flexibility to offer higher compensation to exceptionally deserving applicants. The initial appointment is structured for a period of one year, with the possibility of extensions contingent upon individual performance and the evolving requirements of the institute. However, the document stipulates a strictly enforced ceiling on the total tenure of the engagement, stating, "the total period of engagement does not exceed four years."

The mandate of the Legal Officer is multifaceted, requiring a candidate capable of navigating complex regulatory and statutory environments within an academic setting. The successful incumbent will be primarily responsible for developing and implementing an effective legal compliance system to address potential violations of civil laws and employment-related enactments. Furthermore, the role involves managing litigation and quasi-judicial proceedings, ensuring institutional consistency in internal policies, and overseeing the preparation of para-wise comments on court matters.

Beyond general litigation support, the Legal Officer will be tasked with critical administrative oversight, including ensuring full compliance with the Right to Information (RTI) Act and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act. The officer will also provide legal support to internal bodies such as the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), the SC/ST Cell, and various grievance committees. A significant portion of the workload will involve the vetting of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), agreements, and other essential legal documents, as well as providing counsel on the interpretation of institutional regulations and policies.

To qualify for this position, applicants must hold an LL.B. degree alongside a Post-Graduation degree, with a minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). The institute has mandated a requirement of "a minimum of 5 years’ experience of working in a similar position in Higher educational Institute or Institute of repute." Candidates are expected to possess extensive knowledge of service laws , labour codes , land laws , and the intricacies of legal drafting , alongside proven experience in coordinating with statutory government bodies and external advocates. Proficiency in English is mandatory, with the institute noting that "proficiency in Hindi is preferred" for daily operations. The candidate must also possess a solid working knowledge of computer applications, as the role requires digital management of legal records and filing systems.

The selection process is highly competitive, and the institute has clarified that meeting the essential educational and experience requirements does not guarantee an invitation for the next stage of the recruitment process. Should the volume of applications prove large, the IIFT reserves the right to employ shortlisting criteria at its discretion without the obligation to disclose reasons for rejection. The notification emphasizes that the engagement is strictly contractual and "shall not confer any right or claim for regular appointment in the Institute."

Applicants are directed to submit their credentials through the designated online portal, where they must provide evidence of their work experience, particularly in senior legal associate roles within large-scale industries, law firms, or other autonomous institutions of higher education. These "desirable" qualifications will weigh heavily in the evaluation process. As per the guidelines, selected candidates are expected to be prepared to join their duty immediately upon the receipt of the formal offer.

Regarding the institutional autonomy of the recruitment, the registrar’s office stated, "the decision of the committee w.r.t. shortlisting and selection will be final and binding." This underscores the high standards of professional vetting the IIFT expects for its legal department. All communications regarding the recruitment, including the details for written tests or subsequent interactions, will be conducted exclusively via email. No correspondence will be entertained concerning the status of applications, postal delays, or the specific reasons for any applicant not being shortlisted for an interaction at the Qutab Institutional Area campus in New Delhi. The institute maintains full authority to increase or decrease the number of available posts or cancel the recruitment altogether without prior notification to the applicants.

Candidates are reminded to ensure all application materials are finalized well before the October 27 deadline, as the portal will close precisely according to the institute's schedule. The appointment of a dedicated Legal Officer highlights the institute’s focus on streamlining its internal governance, protecting its institutional interests in judicial forums, and ensuring that its operational procedures remain strictly aligned with federal labor and education laws. The successful candidate will effectively serve as a bridge between the institute's administrative leadership and the various legal, quasi-judicial, and regulatory bodies overseeing the education sector in India.
