Judges Doubtful of Trump Immunity Claim in Election Case

Supreme Today News Desk

A panel of judges on Tuesday expressed skepticism about 's claim that he should be immune from prosecution on charges that he plotted to overturn the 2020 election. This legal battle is set to take center stage as the 77-year-old Trump seeks to clear his name and potentially re-enter the political fray for the 2024 presidential election. During the hearing, Trump's attorney John Sauer attempted to justify the immunity claim, arguing that a president's official acts are beyond the reach of criminal prosecution unless impeachment and conviction occur first. However, District Judge Tanya Chutkan had previously rejected this argument, emphasizing that an ex-president does not possess a blanket 'get out of jail free' pass. The judges hearing Trump's appeal appeared unconvinced by Sauer's arguments as well, highlighting the potential consequences of such immunity and asserting that it could lead to a situation where a president could effectively escape punishment by resigning before being impeached.
