Advocates Association Calls Urgent General Body Meeting After Attack on Advocate Family
The Advocates' Association (KHCAA) has convened an urgent General Body meeting on Friday, , at 1:05 p.m. at the Association Hall. The notice, issued by KHCAA Secretary , asks members to attend and show solidarity with an advocate whose elderly parents were allegedly attacked by an accused person.
Retaliation for a Court Brief
The assault took place around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at the lawyer's family home. According to the FIR registered by the , the accused—Velu and Vavakutty—entered the house armed with a knife and attacked the advocate's parents, aged 80 and 79, as they sat in the verandah. The complaint was given by the lawyer's mother from the hospital, and the FIR was registered in the early hours of Friday.
The police case was registered under Sections 333, 351(3), 118(1), 109(1), and 3(5) of the . These provisions cover , , , , and .
According to the FIR,
"the attack was as a result of the grudge held against the lawyer for taking up the brief of the attacker's wife."
The KHCAA notice likewise says it was retaliation
"for the advocate having conducted a case and obtained a
against him."
A Message of Solidarity
The KHCAA's urgent General Body meeting, scheduled for 1:05 p.m., is intended to let members respond collectively. The notice states:
"All members are requested to attend the meeting without fail and extend their solidarity and support in this serious matter."
The meeting is a decision by the association rather than a court ruling, but it sends a clear message that an assault on a lawyer's family, allegedly linked to court work, will be met with professional solidarity. For the bar, the legal question is not only about the criminal case against the accused, but also about the safety of lawyers who face personal risk because of cases they handle.
