MP High Court Takes Suo Motu Action Over Indore Truck Tragedy, Demands Answers from Police Commissioner

JABALPUR: The High Court of Madhya Pradesh has taken suo motu cognizance of the tragic incident in Indore where a speeding truck ploughed through a busy residential area, resulting in three deaths and injuring 35 people. The court has registered a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) and demanded a detailed explanation from the Indore Police Commissioner regarding the catastrophic lapse in traffic management and public safety.

The Incident: A Rampage in a Residential Area

The court initiated the proceedings based on a news report published in the Dainik Bhaskar’s Indore edition on September 16, 2025. The report, accompanied by a video, detailed how a heavy goods vehicle entered a residential zone between Kalani Nagar Square and Bada Ganpati Square during peak evening hours.

The truck was driven in a "very rash and negligent manner," covering a distance of approximately two kilometers while hitting several cars, two-wheelers, and pedestrians before it caught fire. The incident claimed three lives and left 12 individuals with grievous injuries.

Court's Intervention and Key Questions

Observing the gravity of the situation as depicted in the media report and video, the High Court directed its Registry to register the matter as a Suo Motu PIL (W.P.No.37620 of 2025). The State of Madhya Pradesh and the Commissioner of Police, Indore, were named as respondents.

The court has specifically ordered the Commissioner of Police, Indore, to file a comprehensive affidavit addressing critical questions: * How was the heavy truck permitted to enter a busy residential area during peak hours? * Why was the vehicle allowed to travel for approximately two kilometers without any intervention from the police? * What immediate actions were taken, and why was there a failure to prevent the truck's entry or stop its rampage?

Focus on Future Prevention and Accountability

The High Court's order extends beyond seeking explanations for the past incident. It has also directed the Police Commissioner to outline the preventive measures being proposed to prevent the recurrence of such events in the future.

The Commissioner of Police has been summoned to appear via video conferencing during the next hearing, scheduled for September 23, 2025. Additionally, a senior officer has been ordered to be personally present in the court on that day to assist with the proceedings.
