The National Law Institute University (NLIU), Bhopal, has officially launched the NLIU – Saraf & Partners Advance Certificate Programme on Commercial Arbitration. This initiative, spearheaded by the university’s Civil and Criminal Justice Cell (CCJC) and the Centre for Alternative Dispute Resolution (CADR), aims to address the growing divide between doctrinal legal education and the complex, practical demands of modern litigation. The program is designed to provide law students with high-level exposure to procedural management, strategic drafting, and the nuanced conduct of commercial dispute resolution in India.

By integrating traditional classroom learning with practitioner-led training, the organizers intend to equip participants with the skills necessary to navigate high-stakes commercial environments. The course curriculum was developed in consultation with the full-service law firm Saraf & Partners, ensuring that the topics covered align with contemporary developments in arbitration law, including judicial trends in the enforcement of awards and the evolving architecture of contractual disputes.

A Hybrid Approach to Practical Legal Mastery

The certificate program is structured across two distinct stages to maximize student engagement and learning. Stage I consists of five intensive online learning modules. These sessions are designed to cover the entire lifecycle of a commercial dispute, starting from the foundational structure of litigation and jurisdictional strategy. Key topics include the Commercial Courts Act, 2015, mandatory pre-institution mediation under Section 12-A, and the complexities of choosing between commercial recovery suits and insolvency proceedings under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC).

As students advance through the modules, the focus shifts toward the pre-arbitral framework. The curriculum addresses the drafting of arbitration clauses, the strategic nuances of issuing a Notice of Arbitration, and the practicalities of obtaining interim measures under Section 9 of the Arbitration and Conciliation Act in court, or Section 17 before a tribunal. Furthermore, the modules delve into tribunal dynamics and evidentiary advocacy. Participants are tasked with analyzing the doctrine of Kompetenz-Kompetenz, strategies for challenging unilateral arbitrator appointments under Section 12(5), and the technicalities of cross-examining expert witnesses.

The final segments of the online curriculum transition into post-award challenges and emerging frontiers in law. This includes an analysis of challenging domestic awards under Section 34, the protection of foreign-seated awards under Section 48, and the implications of recent judicial precedents on award modification. The program also tackles cutting-edge issues such as corporate governance, shareholder class actions under Section 245 of the Companies Act, and the arbitrability of intellectual property disputes involving allegations of fraud.

From Drafting to Real-World Application

Stage II of the program invites students to the NLIU campus in Bhopal for two days of hands-on, offline training. On the first day, participants will engage in a rigorous drafting exercise designed to simulate the challenges faced by practitioners. These submissions will be reviewed and evaluated by a panel of lawyers from Saraf & Partners, providing students with direct feedback from industry experts.

The following day features a practitioner-led Roundtable Conference. This session brings together partners from the law firm and distinguished industry guests to discuss the practical realities of arbitration and litigation. This segment serves as both a networking platform and an intellectual forum, where students can observe the application of legal principles in real-world professional practice.

Eligibility for the program is limited to students currently pursuing either a three-year or five-year LL.B. degree. Because the program emphasizes in-person interaction, all participants must be present on the NLIU campus in Bhopal on November 14 and 15, 2026, for the culmination of Stage II. The registration fee is set at ₹6,000, which covers accommodation, reflecting the university's commitment to accessibility for serious, engaged students.

Recognition and Professional Opportunities

The course places a heavy emphasis on merit-based recognition. Participants who successfully complete all online modules and participate in the offline sessions will be awarded a Certificate of Completion. Beyond certification, the program offers significant incentives for high performance. The top-performing participants will be named the competition winners, receiving a cash prize of ₹20,000 and an internship opportunity at Saraf & Partners. The runners-up will receive a cash prize of ₹12,000 and a similar internship opportunity. Furthermore, the program will grant Certificates of Merit to recognize exceptional performance during the drafting and evaluation rounds.

The administrative process is strictly managed to ensure a high-quality experience. Interested candidates must register via the official NLIU form and complete payment through the university's ERP portal by the deadline of October 19, 2026. The organizing team, led by faculty-in-charge Prof. (Dr.) S. Suryaprakash and convenors from the CCJC and CADR, has emphasized that seat availability is limited and will be confirmed on a first-come, first-served basis.

By fostering this direct connection between one of India’s premier law schools and a leading commercial law firm, the program seeks to provide a comprehensive training ground for the next generation of dispute resolution professionals. With the deadline for registration approaching, the university expects a strong turnout from students eager to gain practical insights into the competitive field of commercial arbitration. The program’s success will ultimately be measured by its ability to prepare graduates for the challenges of drafting, advocacy, and strategic management in a legal landscape that continues to evolve under the gaze of the judiciary and the demands of global commerce.
