Oriental University Unveils National Moot Court on AI, Environmental, and Constitutional Law
INDORE, INDIA – The Faculty of Law at Oriental University, Indore, has officially announced the launch of the 3rd Dr. K. L. Thakral Memorial Moot Court Competition for the 2025-26 academic year. The prestigious national-level event invites law students from across India to engage with some of the most pressing legal challenges of our time, focusing on the intricate intersections of Constitutional Law, Environmental Law, and the rapidly evolving domain of Cyber and Artificial Intelligence Law.
As one of the university's flagship annual events, the competition aims to provide a rigorous platform for students to hone essential legal skills. According to the official announcement, the competition is "aimed at nurturing advocacy, research, and drafting skills among law students." By simulating a courtroom environment, the event challenges participants to move beyond theoretical knowledge and apply their learning to complex, multi-faceted legal problems, preparing them for the realities of legal practice.
A Confluence of Contemporary Legal Challenges
The choice of themes for the competition is particularly noteworthy for the legal community. By focusing on Constitutional, Environmental, and Cyber/AI law, Oriental University is directing the next generation of legal minds toward areas of jurisprudence that are currently undergoing significant transformation.
Constitutional Law: This perennial subject remains the bedrock of legal debate. Moot problems in this area often require students to grapple with fundamental rights, separation of powers, and the interpretation of constitutional provisions in the context of modern societal changes. The inclusion of this theme ensures participants are well-versed in the foundational principles that govern the nation's legal framework.
Environmental Law: With climate change and environmental degradation becoming central global issues, environmental jurisprudence is more critical than ever. Participants will likely face hypothetical scenarios involving environmental impact assessments, corporate liability for pollution, the rights of nature, and the enforcement of international environmental treaties within the domestic legal system. This reflects a growing demand in the legal profession for expertise in green laws and sustainability regulations.
Cyber/AI Law: The most forward-looking theme, the focus on Cyber and AI law, places the competition at the cutting edge of legal education. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into society, novel legal questions are emerging concerning data privacy, algorithmic bias, intellectual property for AI-generated works, and the regulatory framework for autonomous technologies. Law students participating in this moot will be among the first cohorts to formally debate these issues, which are set to dominate legal discourse for decades to come.
As the brochure states, the competition's focus on these areas is designed to "encourage participants to explore evolving jurisprudence," signaling an academic commitment to preparing students for the future of law, not just its past.
Competition Structure and Key Dates
The competition is structured to test a comprehensive range of legal skills through a multi-stage process that blends online and on-campus formats. The timeline is designed to allow teams ample time for in-depth research and preparation.
