Farmers' Protest
Subject : Legal
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has called for an amicable resolution of the ongoing farmers' protest, emphasizing the need to balance the fundamental right to protest with the maintenance of law and order. The court issued notices to the Centre, and the states of Haryana and Punjab, on two separate petitions filed pertaining to the farmers' Delhi Chalo march.
The court observed that the issue should be resolved amicably between all parties and areas should be identified by the states where the protest can be held. It also directed the governments of Punjab and Haryana to ensure that the protest is held only in designated places.
The court's remarks came amid reports of drones being used to drop tear gas on the farmers and the protestors throwing stones. The court emphasized that the use of force should be the last resort and that all parties should work towards a peaceful resolution.
The farmers are protesting over their demands, which include a law guaranteeing Minimum Support Price (MSP) and debt waiver. The court has sought a status report on the protest from the Centre and the governments of Punjab and Haryana and has adjourned the matter till Thursday.
