South Africa Accuses Israel of Genocide in Gaza War at International Court of Justice

Supreme Today News Desk

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands, began proceedings on Thursday in a case brought by South Africa against Israel, accusing the latter of committing "genocidal" acts during its war against Hamas in Gaza. South Africa has filed an urgent appeal to the ICJ to force Israel to immediately suspend its military operations in the Gaza Strip. The accusation is based on actions taken by Israel throughout the war and controversial comments made by Israeli officials regarding Palestinians in Gaza. South Africa's Justice Minister Ronald Lamola stated that Palestinians have suffered at the hands of Israel since 1948 and that the violence and destruction in Palestine did not begin on October 7, 2023. He emphasized that Gaza is still considered under occupation by international law. An attorney for South Africa, Adila Hassim, argued that Israel's bombing campaign aimed at the 'destruction of Palestinian life'. Israel has dismissed the case as 'atrocious' and 'preposterous' and vowed to set out a robust defense on Friday. The case has sparked protests outside the court, with pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian demonstrators expressing their views.
