Case Law
Subject : Property Law - Land Acquisition
New Delhi – The Supreme Court of India has adjourned a significant batch of cases concerning land acquisition, led by The Deputy Commissioner and Special Land Acquisition Officer vs. M/s S.V. Global Mill Limited . The bench, comprising Hon’ble Mr. Justice M.M. Sundresh and Hon’ble Mr. Justice Joymalya Bagchi , has scheduled the next hearing for September 17, 2025 .
The matter, which encompasses a large number of interconnected Special Leave Petitions (SLPs) and interim applications, revolves around disputes arising from land acquisition proceedings initiated by the state. The lead petitioner is The Deputy Commissioner and Special Land Acquisition Officer, challenging orders passed by the High Court of Karnataka at Bengaluru. The primary respondent is M/s S.V. Global Mill Limited, a private entity.
The sheer volume of linked cases and the involvement of numerous legal representatives, including the Attorney General for India, Mr. R. Venkataramani, underscores the complexity and high stakes of the litigation.
In a brief hearing, the Supreme Court did not delve into the merits of the case. Instead, it focused on case management to streamline the proceedings. The Court issued a specific directive to facilitate coordination among the numerous parties involved.
The order states:
"Mr. V. Shyammohan, Adv. on behalf of KMNP Law ... shall assist and coordinate with the learned Attorney General of India."
This appointment aims to ensure that the arguments and documentation from the various petitioners and respondents are presented in an organized manner in future hearings.
The Court's decision was purely procedural. By appointing a coordinating counsel and setting a future date, the bench has paved the way for a more structured hearing of this extensive legal battle. No substantive judgment on the land acquisition dispute was delivered. The final order from the Court simply read:
"List the matters on 17.09.2025 at 2.00 P.M."
The adjournment and procedural arrangements indicate that the case involves multifaceted legal questions that require comprehensive preparation and coordination before final arguments can be heard. All eyes will be on the September 2025 hearing for further developments in this large-scale land acquisition dispute.
