Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Appointment of Justices N KotiswarSingh and RMahadevan as Judges

Bringing Diversity and Representation to the Apex Court

In a significant move, the Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, has recommended the appointment of two high court judges, Justice N KotiswarSingh and Justice RMahadevan , as judges of the Supreme Court.

Justice N KotiswarSingh : Representing the North-East

Justice N KotiswarSingh , currently serving as the Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, has been recommended for elevation to the Supreme Court. Hailing from Manipur, Justice Singh 's appointment would mark the first time a judge from the state would be represented on the Apex Court bench.

The Collegium, in its resolution, highlighted Justice Singh 's "impeccable record, both in judicial capacity and in terms of the work which has been rendered by him on the administrative side." They noted that his elevation would provide much-needed representation to the North-East region.

Justice RMahadevan : Enhancing Diversity

The Collegium has also recommended the appointment of Justice RMahadevan , the Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, to the Supreme Court. Justice Mahadevan , who belongs to a backward community from Tamil Nadu, was given precedence over other senior judges to ensure greater diversity on the Apex Court bench.

The Collegium noted that "the appointment of Mr Justice RMahadevan will bring diversity to the Bench" and that it has "taken due note of the fact that Mr Justice RMahadevan ranks third in the order of presently serving judges of the Madras High Court."

Strengthening the Judiciary

The recommendations by the Supreme Court Collegium come at a time when the Apex Court is operating with a reduced bench, with 32 judges out of a sanctioned strength of 34, including the Chief Justice.

The elevation of Justices Singh and Mahadevan is expected to bolster the Supreme Court's diversity and representation, ensuring that the Judiciary reflects the diverse composition of the nation it serves.

As the legal community eagerly awaits the Central government's response to these recommendations, the Supreme Court Collegium's decision stands as a testament to its commitment to strengthening the India n judiciary and upholding the principles of justice and equality.
