NEET UG 2024 Exam Controversy
Subject : Education - Entrance Exams
The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for undergraduate medical courses, NEET UG 2024, has been embroiled in a major controversy over allegations of irregularities and malpractices. The integrity of the exam, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), has come under scrutiny due to claims of widespread paper leaks and other forms of cheating.
Allegations of Malpractices and Calls for Re-Exam
Soon after the NEET UG 2024 results were announced on June 4, 2024, students and guardians raised concerns about the high number of top-ranking candidates, the administration of grace marks, and the overall fairness of the exam. Petitions were filed in the Supreme Court seeking the cancellation of the exam and a re-test, arguing that the alleged malpractices had compromised the sanctity of the examination.
The Supreme Court Hearing
The Supreme Court of India has now begun hearing a batch of 38 petitions related to the NEET UG 2024 controversy. The bench, comprising Chief Justice

Government and NTA's Response
The central government and the NTA have filed affidavits before the Supreme Court, opposing the demand to cancel the exam. They have argued that the instances of alleged malpractices are isolated and do not warrant the scrapping of the entire exam, which would jeopardize the future of lakhs of honest students.
Delay in NEET UG 2024 Counselling
The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) had earlier scheduled the counselling process for the NEET UG 2024 exam to begin on July 6. However, this process has now been postponed until further notice, pending the outcome of the Supreme Court hearing.
The calls for a re-exam have divided the student community. While some petitioners have sought a fresh test, arguing that the paper leak and other irregularities have compromised the exam's integrity, others have opposed the idea, fearing that a re-exam would delay their academic and career prospects.
The Supreme Court's decision in this matter will have far-reaching implications for the future of medical education in the country. As the hearing progresses, the court's stance on balancing the concerns of affected students and the larger public interest will be closely watched.
