Permanent Commission for Women in Coast Guard
Subject : Legal - Gender Equality
The Supreme Court of India has ordered the Indian Coast Guard to grant Permanent Commission to eligible women short-service commission officers, emphasizing that women cannot be left out of the defense service. The court warned against the "patriarchal attitude" of the Coast Guard and stressed that arguments over functionality and similarity factors are not valid excuses for excluding women. The decision came in response to a plea by a woman officer seeking a Permanent Commission, which would allow her to serve in the Coast Guard on a permanent basis. The court also directed the Centre to file a response and scheduled the next hearing for March 1.
