Supreme Court Quashes Defamation Case Against Tejashwi Yadav:

In a major relief for former Bihar deputy chief minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav, the Supreme Court on Tuesday quashed a criminal defamation case instituted against him in Ahmedabad. The court order came after Yadav had earlier in January this year filed an affidavit in the Supreme court withdrawing his statement that ‘only Gujaratis are thugs.’

Supreme Court Refuses to Stay Operation of New Law Governing Appointment of CEC, ECs:

The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to stay the operation of the new law on the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners by a panel excluding the Chief Justice of India. The court, however, issued notice to the Centre on a plea and listed it along with other pending petitions on the same issue for hearing in April.

Supreme Court Excused a Lawyer Stuck in Traffic Due to Farmers’ Protest to Argue His Case from His Car:

In an interesting incident, the Supreme Court excused a lawyer for arguing his case from his car. The incident took place on Tuesday, in the court of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, when a lawyer appeared before the court though a video conferencing link, but was seen to be seated in his car. The court took objection to it saying “We have no problem on lawyers appearing virtually but not in a moving car like this ..”

Supreme Court Directs Delhi Govt to Hold Meeting to Get Encroachment by a Political Party Removed on Land Allotted to Delhi HC:

The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Delhi Government and the Registrar General of the Delhi High Court to hold a meeting for the removal of encroachment on land allotted to the High Court at Rouse Avenue in the national capital. The court was informed that a political party has set up its office on the land parcel allotted to the High Court.

Sharad Pawar Moves Supreme Court Against ECI Recognising Ajit Pawar Faction as Real NCP:

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Sharad Pawar has moved the Supreme Court against the order of the Election Commission of India (ECI) declaring the rival faction led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar as the real Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

As farmers from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh prepare to march towards the national capital pressing for their demand for Minimum Support Price, lawyers body, the Supreme Court bar association, has written to the Chief Justice of India to take cognisance of issue and pass orders against farmers who plan to enter Delhi.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court hearing pleas related to the farmers’ protest on Tuesday said that the use of force should be the last resort and the issue should be resolved amicably. The court suggested that the area for holding protests by farmers should be identified by states.

Delhi High Court Says Cannot be Expected from Municipal Authorities to Completely Wipe Out from Roads All Stray Animals:

The Delhi High Court has said that the duty of the municipal authorities is to take concerted, sincere and optimum steps to ensure that stray animals whether cattle, monkeys, dogs or other animals are rehabilitated and do not pose a menace to residents of Delhi or to the traffic plying on the roads but it cannot be expected that the municipal authorities can completely wipe out from the roads and municipal areas of the national capital all stray animals or other animals.

Madhya Pradesh High Court Pulls Up Authorities for Demolishing Two Houses Without Proper Opportunity to Owners:

The Madhya Pradesh High Court has pulled up the authorities of the Municipal Council of Ujjain for demolishing two houses without giving proper opportunity to the owners of the house to get it regularised, saying that it has become fashionable now for local administration and local bodies to demolish any house by drawing up proceedings without complying with the Principal of Natural Justice and publish it in the newspaper.

The Supreme Court expressed its shock on Tuesday when it came to know that a political party's office is located on a plot that was allotted to the Delhi High Court. The court asked the Chief Secretary of the Delhi government, the Secretary to the Delhi Public Works Department and the Finance Secretary to the Delhi government to hold a meeting with the Registrar General of Delhi High Court to resolve the issue.
