Judicial Integrity
Subject : Criminal Law - Civil-Criminal Conversion
The Supreme Court of India has taken a strict stance against unscrupulous litigants who attempt to mislead the judiciary through "concealment, falsehood, and forum hunting." In a recent case, the court imposed an exemplary cost of Rs 25 lakh on a litigant for attempting to convert a civil dispute into a criminal case. The bench, comprising Justices D.Y. Chandrachud, M.R. Shah, and Hima Kohli, expressed concern over the increasing trend of litigants misusing the legal system for personal gain. The court emphasized that such actions not only overburden the criminal justice system but also violate the principles of fairness and right conduct in legal matters. The court's decision serves as a strong deterrent against those who seek to manipulate the legal process for their own benefit.
