Supreme Court to Hear Plea for CA Exam Postponement Amidst Lok Sabha Elections
The Supreme Court of India is set to hear a plea on April 29th, 2024, regarding the postponement of the Chartered Accountants (CA) Intermediate and Final examinations scheduled for May 2nd to May 17th, 2024. The plea has been filed by a group of CA students who are seeking a postponement of the exams due to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, which are scheduled to be held in seven phases from April 19th to June 1st, 2024.
The petitioners argue that the clash between the CA exams and the Lok Sabha elections will create logistical challenges for students, particularly those who are required to travel to different cities for the exams. They also contend that the election campaign period, which is typically characterized by increased political rallies and public gatherings, could disrupt their studies and preparation for the exams.
The Delhi High Court had earlier dismissed a similar plea filed by CA students, stating that there is no legal provision that prohibits the conduct of examinations during the Lok Sabha elections. However, the petitioners have appealed to the Supreme Court, arguing that the High Court's decision failed to take into account the unique circumstances faced by CA students and the importance of their right to vote in the upcoming elections.
The Supreme Court's decision on the plea is expected to have a significant impact on the over 4 lakh CA students who are scheduled to appear for the exams. If the Court decides to postpone the exams, it could provide relief to the students and allow them to focus on their studies and preparation without the added pressure of the elections. However, if the Court upholds the Delhi High Court's decision, the students will have to make arrangements to travel and appear for the exams amidst the election campaign period.
The Supreme Court's hearing on the plea is scheduled for April 29th, 2024, and the decision is expected to be announced shortly thereafter.
