Facial disfigurement can profoundly impact a person's life, affecting not just physical appearance but also emotional well-being, career prospects, and social interactions. But what is facial disfigurement in the eyes of the law? This blog explores the definition, key legal contexts, court interpretations, and practical advice for claims.
Facial disfigurement generally refers to a permanent or partial deformity, damage, or alteration to any part of the face that makes a person look ugly or uncomfortable, often stemming from injuries such as acid attacks, fractures, or trauma. It is recognized in criminal law (e.g., under IPC Sections 326A/326B) and compensation cases as a basis for disability assessment and enhanced damages. The condition is distinguished by its impact on appearance and function, with severity levels like severe or very severe influencing compensation schedules under statutes like the Employee’s Compensation Act, 1923.
