JUDGMENT :

ANANYA BANDYOPADHYAY, J.

1. This appeal is preferred against the order and judgment passed on 02.05.2003 by the 1st Additional District and Sessions Judge, Chinsura, Hooghly, being Sessions Trial Case No. 131 of 1997 whereas the Learned Court convicted the accused persons and sentenced the same under Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code to suffer rigorous imprisonment for 2 years and to pay a fine of Rs.1,000/- each, in default, to suffer rigorous imprisonment for 6 months and also convicted the appellants under Section 304B of the Indian Penal Code and sentenced to suffer rigorous imprisonment for 7 years and to pay a fine of Rs.5,000/- each, in default, to suffer rigorous imprisonment for a further period of one (1) year. Both the sentences to run concurrently.

2. The prosecution case precisely stated on 14.11.1993 the de facto complainant Smt. Lakshmi Debi lodged a complaint at Uttarpara Police Station, inter alia, stating that her daughter Rina Rani Saha married Bishnu Prasad Gupta, the appellant on 22nd day of May, 1993. At the time of marriage the mother-in-law of the victim Rina demanded a sum of Rs.25,000/-, 20 bhoris of gold and one scooter for his son Bishnu Pras
